Diamond vs. Brilliant

A diamond is a mineral, pure carbon in its hardest known form. A brilliant, on the other hand, is a diamond cut in a specific way, using the brilliant cut, which maximizes its sparkle and play of light. Every brilliant is a diamond, but not every diamond becomes a brilliant. It is the precise cutting and polishing that give it its legendary brilliance.

Clarity

Clarity, as defined by the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in its 4C grading system, refers to the presence of natural inclusions, internal characteristics such as microscopic crystals, gas bubbles, or tiny fractures - as well as surface blemishes on a diamond. These formations develop over millions of years deep within the Earth, serving as a unique imprint of the diamond’s geological history. The fewer such imperfections, the rarer, more transparent, and more valuable the diamond becomes. GIA assesses clarity under 10x magnification, classifying diamonds with a precise scale that determines their exceptional quality and worth.

Cut

It is the only factor in the 4C system that is entirely dependent on human craftsmanship. Precision cutting can either maximize a diamond’s radiance or diminish its sparkle.

A perfectly cut diamond reflects light from one facet to another, directing it back through the crown and creating the mesmerizing effect known as ‘brilliance’ and ‘fire’. Even a diamond with flawless clarity and exceptional color will not shine to its full potential if its cut is not executed to perfection.

Carat

Carat, in the 4C scale, is determined by the weight of the diamond, measured in carats (ct). One carat is equal to 0.2 grams, roughly the weight of a single grain of sugar. While larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, the weight itself does not dictate their quality. Equally important are the cut, color, and clarity, which influence the optical appearance of the stone.

Two diamonds of the same weight can appear quite different. If a diamond is poorly cut and too flat, it may seem larger but won’t reflect light well. On the other hand, a perfectly cut diamond with a smaller weight may shine much more intensely than a larger diamond with poor proportions.

Color

Color, in the 4C scale, refers to the natural hue of a diamond, or more accurately, the absence of it. The most valuable diamonds are colorless because the purity of their structure allows light to pass through and reflect freely, creating an intense brilliance.

D-F VVS1 diamonds: what do these parameters mean

At BELLER, we set diamonds with D-F color and VVS1 clarity: this is at the very top of the scale. D-F color means colorless or almost colorless stones: the purest, "icy" brilliance without yellowish tones. VVS1 clarity (very very slightly included) refers to inclusions so tiny that they are difficult to see even under ten-fold magnification: they are invisible to the naked eye. In practice: a diamond with these parameters reflects light purely and intensely, regardless of the lighting.

GIA Certificate: a document, not a declaration

The center stones in our jewelry are certified by GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the most rigorous independent gemological laboratory in the world. The certificate describes every parameter of the stone: weight, color, clarity, cut, proportions, and fluorescence. This is the difference between a "seller's assurance" and a document that remains valid everywhere: for appraisal, insurance, or years later, when passing the jewelry on to the next generation.

Cut: a parameter visible from the other side of the room

It's not the carat, but the cut that's responsible for a diamond's brilliance.
