Some decisions ripen more slowly than the feeling behind them. You already know it is for good, but the wedding date, the flat and everything else still lie ahead. It is exactly in that space that the pre-engagement ring appears, a gesture offered earlier than the question. It does not replace a proposal and it hurries nothing, it simply names what is already there.
What is a pre-engagement ring?
A pre-engagement ring is a ring given before a formal proposal, as a sign of a lasting commitment rather than an announcement of a wedding date. It is often called a promise ring and usually takes a delicate form, with a small stone or none at all, because its role is to be worn every day, not to herald a ceremony.
The custom reached Poland from the Anglo-Saxon world, but it settled here in its own version, quieter and less declarative. In our atelier such rings are ordered by couples with long histories together, by people in long distance relationships and by those who want an important moment to leave a physical trace before the rest arrives.
How does it differ from an engagement ring?
The difference lies in meaning, not in construction. An engagement ring is a question and announces a wedding, a pre-engagement ring states a fact and commits to no date. Everything else follows from that: the stone tends to be smaller or absent, the band narrower, and the whole designed to be worn daily without a second thought.
In practice this means a different scale. Where an engagement ring naturally starts from a diamond of 0.30 ct, here we more often speak of stones between 0.035 and 0.15 ct, or of a pure form in gold. When is a pre-engagement ring given?
There is no single date, because this is a private gesture rather than part of a protocol. It appears most often on the anniversary of a relationship, when moving in together, before a longer separation, or simply when you want to say something without raising the subject of a wedding.
One thing is worth remembering: since the ring is not a question, it helps to say plainly what it is. A sentence explaining the intention spares misunderstandings and lets the gesture be read exactly as it was meant.
Does a pre-engagement ring need a diamond?
It does not. A smooth form in gold works just as well, or a ring with a small stone, or one where the most important part is an engraving hidden on the inside. The stone is a choice, not a condition.

On which finger is a pre-engagement ring worn?
Most often on the ring finger of the right hand or the middle finger of the left, which is to say outside the place reserved for an engagement ring and a wedding band. It is a practical arrangement, because it leaves that place free for what is to come.
This is a custom rather than a rule. Some people wear such a ring on a chain, others on the very finger where the engagement ring will later sit. Comfort decides, along with whatever feels natural.

We make each of them by hand in our own atelier in Warsaw, in 585 or 750 gold, in white, yellow or rose. We do not rank the two standards, we distinguish them by character: 585 is harder and more often chosen for jewellery worn without a break, 750 has a warmer, deeper tone. What happens to it after the engagement?
It stays, and that is perhaps its best quality. A pre-engagement ring does not lose its meaning at the moment of a proposal, because it describes a different stage and a different moment. It is usually moved to the other hand or worn alongside the engagement ring, which we cover in our article on how to wear a wedding band with an engagement ring.
If years later it is to change form, nothing stands in the way. The stone can move to a new setting and the gold can be used in another design. One resizing is included in the price of the ring, engraving is free, and our jewellery is covered by a lifetime service of cleaning, polishing and repairs.
Where can you see such a ring in person?
Stones of this size have to be seen, because in a product photograph they look nothing like they do on a hand. A 0.10 ct diamond measures about 3 mm across and on a finger reads as a point of light rather than as a stone, which for this particular gesture is often exactly the point.
