GIA Certificate - what does it mean and why is it more important than the price of the ring?

How do I know it's a fair price?

This is one of the most common questions asked by men buying an engagement ring for the first time. And a very fair question. The jewelry market can be opaque. The same diamond weight, the same setting color - and prices differing by half. How is this possible?

The answer is simple: the same stone can be described in different ways. A diamond can be described generally as '0.5 carat diamond' or precisely as '0.50 CT diamond, color E, clarity VVS1, GIA certificate number XXXXXXXXX'. The difference between these two descriptions is the difference between buying blind and buying with full knowledge.

A GIA certificate is your insurance policy against overpaying and dishonesty.

What is GIA and why is it trustworthy?

GIA, or the Gemological Institute of America, is an independent, non-profit gemological institute founded in 1931 and headquartered in the United States. It is recognized as the most reliable source for diamond grading and certification worldwide.

One word is key: non-profit. GIA does not sell diamonds and is not affiliated with any jeweler or jewelry seller. Its sole task is to precisely and impartially grade stones. That is why a GIA certificate is accepted and recognized worldwide - from New York to Tokyo.

If a jeweler offers their own certificate or a certificate from a lesser-known institution instead of GIA, it's a red flag worth noting.

The 4C's Scale - how are diamonds graded?

GIA grades diamonds according to the 4C's system, which they themselves created and popularized worldwide. The four letters are: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat.

Color is graded on a scale from D to Z, where D means a perfectly colorless stone, and the further down the alphabet, the more yellowish tint. BELLER diamonds have a color grade of D-E, which is the highest we offer in our workshop.

Clarity is graded under 10x magnification. The scale starts from FL (flawless - no inclusions) and ends at I3. BELLER diamonds have a clarity of VVS1, meaning very very slight inclusions invisible to the naked eye.

Cut describes the proportions and precision of the cut. A good cut is essential for the stone's full brilliance. Weight is given in carats (CT), where 1 carat = 0.2 grams.

How to read a GIA certificate step by step

At first glance, a GIA certificate looks like a wall of numbers and abbreviations, but it always has the same, predictable layout. You just need to know where to find specific information to get a full picture of the stone in a few seconds.

1. Report Number - a unique number in the upper left corner, the same one that is microscopically engraved on the girdle of the diamond. You use it to check the authenticity of the certificate in the GIA database.

2. Shape and Cutting Style - e.g., Round Brilliant, Cushion, Marquise. It tells you the shape of the stone and the pattern according to which the facets were cut.

3. Measurements - given in millimeters, e.g., 6.50-6.53 x 4.01 mm for a round brilliant. This is the actual diameter and depth of the stone, which should be compared with its carats.

4. Carat Weight - the weight of the stone to the hundredth of a carat, e.g., 1.02 ct.

5. Color Grade - a letter from D to Z. BELLER diamonds have a color grade of D-E, which means colorless or near colorless.

6. Clarity Grade - from FL to I3. BELLER diamonds have a clarity of VVS1.

7. Cut Grade - a grade from Excellent to Poor, primarily for round brilliant cuts. It determines how the stone reflects light.

8. Polish, Symmetry - two additional parameters for finish quality, also on a scale from Excellent to Poor, affecting the ultimate brilliance.

9. Fluorescence - describes whether and how the stone reacts to UV light (None, Faint, Medium, Strong). It's not a flaw in itself, but it's good to be aware of it.

10. Proportions Diagram - a graphical drawing showing the crown and pavilion angles of the stone, which is a visual representation of the cut grade described above.

With these ten points, you can independently evaluate any GIA certificate, not just the one included with a BELLER ring, but also any other you may encounter during your search.

How to check the authenticity of a GIA certificate?

Each GIA-certified diamond has a microscopic report number engraved on it. You can only see it with a jeweler's loupe, but it's there. The same number appears on the paper certificate.

GIA provides a free Report Check website (reportcheck.gia.edu) where you can enter the number and verify the authenticity of the report and the detailed data of the stone. If the jeweler refuses to show the certificate or the number cannot be verified in the GIA database - do not buy.

At BELLER, every engagement ring purchase includes an original GIA certificate. We show it during your visit to the atelier and explain what each parameter means in practice.
