Engagement in Kraków: where to propose and when to order the ring

The Krakus Mound at sunrise, the Vistula Boulevards below a lit Wawel, an empty Main Square at six in the morning. Kraków places that work for a proposal, plus the practical part: timing, ring size and collection at Szczepańska 9.

A proposal is one sentence that gets remembered word for word. Kraków gives that sentence a setting you will not find anywhere else in Poland: walls that have stood for seven centuries, sunrise light over the bend of the Vistula and a silence on the Main Square that lasts until the first cafes open. Below you will find places that work for that moment, along with the practical part: when to order the ring, how to learn her size and where to collect it a few steps from the Main Square.

Where in Kraków should you propose at sunrise?

The calmest sunrise view belongs to the Krakus Mound in Podgórze, because at six in the morning the whole city is visible from a single point and there is practically nobody there. The climb takes a few minutes and the panorama covers Wawel, the church towers and the Beskid range on a clear day. The second option is the Kościuszko Mound in Zwierzyniec, set higher and better prepared for visitors, with a view of the Vistula and the Tatras on bright mornings.

Morning has one more advantage: the light is soft and warm, so photographs from that moment come out naturally, with no harsh shadows.

Which spot by the Vistula works best in the evening?

In the evening the Vistula Boulevards below Wawel work best, because the illuminated castle reflects in the water and creates a backdrop no interior can repeat. The boulevards are wide, so it is easy to find a stretch away from cyclists and groups. On the other bank waits the Father Bernatek Footbridge, lit after dark, with acrobat sculptures suspended above the span.

If you prefer something more private, walk towards Podgórze, where there is less traffic and Wawel appears from a perspective most visitors to Kraków never see.

Does the Main Square work for a proposal?

Yes, provided you choose an hour when the square belongs to a handful of people, which means early morning or late at night. During the day the largest medieval square in Europe is simply full, and intimacy matters here more than scenery. Around six in the morning you have the whole Cloth Hall to yourself, empty space in front of the Town Hall Tower and the bugle call from St Mary's tower, which sounds every hour.

The arcades of the Cloth Hall also give shelter from the wind and a natural frame, and a few dozen metres away lies Szczepański Square, quieter at any hour.

Where can you propose in Kraków when it rains?

Rain in Kraków changes the setting, not the plan, because this city has an unusual number of beautiful interiors open to everyone. The arcaded courtyard at Wawel gives shelter and Renaissance architecture in one frame, the Cloth Hall lets you cross the whole square dry, and wet cobblestones reflect the lamplight better than dry ones.

It is worth choosing two places, one outdoors and one under a roof, so the weather stays a detail rather than the subject of the day.

When should you order the ring so it is ready for your date?

Ready models from the Promise collection can be seen and taken straight from the boutique, and pieces shipped from the atelier are prepared within 2 to 5 working days. A ring designed from scratch is a separate conversation, worth starting earlier, because that leaves time to choose the stone, the band width and the colour of the gold without haste.

Promise is built around a central diamond of D-E colour and VVS1 clarity with a GIA certificate. Engagement rings with a certified diamond start at BELLER from 3 750 PLN, model N°18 with a 0.30 CT diamond costs 10 950 PLN, N°24 with a 0.50 CT cushion cut diamond is 21 500 PLN, and N°27 with a 0.70 CT marquise is 32 500 PLN. We make each of them by hand in our own atelier in Warsaw, in 585 or 750 gold, in white, yellow or rose. You can read more about the stone itself in our guide to the 4Cs of a diamond and in the article on what a GIA certificate means.

How can you learn her ring size discreetly?

The surest method is to borrow, for one evening, a ring she wears on her ring finger and bring it to the boutique, where we measure the diameter on the spot. The second option is to trace the inner circle on paper or measure the circumference with a paper strip, described step by step in our guide on how to choose an engagement ring size.

Two details change the result: fingers swell in heat and towards the end of the day, and a ring with a wider band sits tighter than a narrow one of the same size.

Where in Kraków can you collect the ring before proposing?

The BELLER boutique stands at Szczepańska 9, a few steps from the Main Square, so you can collect the ring literally on the way to the place you have chosen. We are open Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 19:00, with no appointment needed. On site you can compare diamonds in natural light and see how the stone behaves as the hand moves. A screen cannot convey that, and for a decision of this weight half an hour at the counter means more than an evening with a catalogue.

We hand over the ring in a box ready to be presented, so nothing has to be repacked at the last moment. If you prefer a calm visit with time reserved for you, write to us through our contact page. You will find more about what awaits you on site in the article on engagement rings in Kraków, and we wrote about the moment itself in our guide on how to propose.

What happens to the ring after the yes?

One resizing is included in the price of the ring, so the difference between a measurement and a real finger stops being a problem. We handle it in the atelier and you collect the finished piece at the boutique. Engraving is free, including after the engagement, once the date has gained its meaning.

Our refreshing and polishing service covers our jewellery with no time limit, so the small marks a ring collects over the years disappear after a visit to the boutique. When the time comes for wedding bands, we match them so they sit against the engagement ring, which we describe further in the article on how to wear a wedding band with an engagement ring. You are welcome at Atelier Kraków at Szczepańska 9 and at Atelier Warsaw at Mokotowska 71.
